A pawn that advances all the way to the opposite side of the board is promoted to another piece of that player's choice of a queen, rook, bishop, or knight of the same color. The pawn is immediately replaced by the new piece. The choice of promotion is not limited to captured pieces. It is both legal and possible for one player to simultaneously have as many as ten knights, ten bishops, ten rooks or nine queens. Promotion is often called "queening", because the piece chosen is nearly always a queen.

Info: A freshman at WWHS it's very easy to overlook Carmine as mostly useless. Certainly, his calculated movements and matter-of-fact way of speaking comes off as slow and pedantic. But, one who understands chess, is not going to make the mistake of undervaluing their pawns.

Or at least that's what Carmine says.

A White Pawn, Carmine Anthony Shamat acts very much in the way one would expect a pawn to act. Carmine is a very academic person, taking into account all viewpoints and consequences, followed by a weighing of the pros and cons, and then an executive decision. With Carmine, every risk must be calculated and scrutinized, until it's barely a risk at all. The same applies to Carmines' interactions with people. The pawn is always thinking at least 100 moves ahead, and, if he's not speaking, he's thinking, "How will this action/conversation impact my relationship with this person in the future?" As one would imagine this somewhat alienates him as a freak and a pessimist. Carmine prefers to call himself an "extreme realist."

This "extreme realism," by the way, is how Carmine was able to ascend the ranks, and become one of the main strategists for the Football Team. Only the coaches, Devin the Demon and Carmines' brother, Arturo Shamat the Red Rook are even aware that Carmine is more than just waterboy. Carmines' eye for detail and calculating demeanor helps him weigh how certain plays work out, by taking into account the stats of the current players and the current opposition. It's little known among the rest of the student body, but Carmine is one of the main reasons that the WWHS Football Team has been near invincible in recent games. This doesn't mean that he's immune from the Football teams' shenanigans, however. Carmine isn't too good to be dumped in the Gatorade or strung up by his boxers.

And it's when things like that happen that Carmine actually becomes a pessimist. Being treated as a gopher for the Football Team, Carmine has a hard time reconciling his duties as a strategist with the near thankless way he's treated. This is one of the two times Carmine isn't overly-rational, or even rational at all. Carmine becomes unresponsive, rapt in his thoughts that the world is just like high school; thankless and uncaring of even the hardest workers. The world becomes so unfair and chaotic. This all falls to the wayside, however, when Carmine gets' a glimpse of the other reason he becomes irrational.

Like most of us (don't lie, you know you were too,) in high school, Carmine is experimenting with his sexuality. He's bisexual, but is leaning towards just being attracted to and having relationships with men. This becomes very awkward in the locker room, mind you, because Carmine is prone to sneaking peeks of the football players while they're changing. But the one Carmine REALLY wants to get closer too is JD Moon, the freshman Kumiho. The usual, analytical pawn falls away, and Carmine becomes a purely emotionally-driven creature around JD. It's something he can't explain, but all Carmine knows is that he sees something in JD that he wants to help and protect.
